Ultimate E-Bike Buyer’s Checklist (Avoid Costly Mistakes)

Before you commit to a used e-bike, run through this checklist. It can save you hundreds and stop you riding away with a bike that’s stolen, broken, or about to need a £500 battery replacement.

Pro tip: Buying through Rydiqo® includes Buyer Protection and optional insured nationwide delivery from £89 — ideal for higher-value e-bikes where a Facebook handover is too risky.

Battery Checks

  • Confirm capacity in Wh (or Ah × voltage) and match to the range you actually need
  • Verify the stated real-world range — rider weight, terrain, and assist level all affect it
  • Typical lithium battery lifespan is 5–7 years with proper care — ask the seller when it was last replaced
  • Confirm the original charger is included. If not, you can find compatible chargers on Rydiqo®
  • Look for swelling, dents, or corroded contacts on the battery housing

Motor & Performance

  • Verify motor wattage and torque match the listing and the spec plate on the bike
  • Watch model-specific reviews to learn the common faults and real-world range numbers
  • Check for firmware speed limits or de-restriction. UK road-legal e-bikes are 250W and capped at 15.5 mph — anything faster needs licence, tax, and insurance
  • Test the assist on a hill if you can — cuts and stutters often indicate motor or sensor issues

Serial Numbers & Proof of Ownership

  • Match frame and motor serial numbers against the receipt or manufacturer records
  • Ask for proof of purchase or ownership transfer paperwork
  • Run the serial through BikeRegister or Immobilise before paying
  • Look for repainted frames or mismatched components — classic stolen-bike concealment tactics
!

If the seller can’t produce a receipt and won’t share clear photos of the serial number, walk away. The savings aren’t worth losing the bike to police recovery later.

Physical Condition

  • Inspect the frame for cracks, dents, weld repairs, or misalignment — carbon frames especially
  • Test brakes, gears, and suspension for smooth operation. Listen for grinding or clicking
  • Look for rust or water damage on contacts, connectors, and the control unit
  • Check tyres for tread depth, sidewall cracks, and even wear
  • Inspect cables and housings — frayed cables are easy to fix but indicate neglect

Price & Total Cost of Ownership

  • Compare against similar models on Rydiqo®, eBay sold filter, and a Pure Electric / Cycle Republic showroom for new pricing
  • Budget £80–£150/year for service and consumables (brake pads, chain, tyres)
  • Factor in a battery replacement at year 5–7 — £300–£600 depending on system
  • Lights, helmet, lock, and a charger if not included — another £100–£250

Payment & Handover

  • Pay through Rydiqo® for full Buyer Protection — never cash, bank transfer, or PayPal F&F
  • If collecting in person, bring someone with you and inspect everything before confirming handover in-app
  • If using Rydiqo® Delivery, you have a 48-hour window to raise a “not as described” case with photo or video proof
