How to Send an E-Bike in the UK — Step by Step

Sold an e-bike, bought one miles away, or just need to move one? Sending an e-bike isn’t like posting a parcel. It’s big, heavy and has a lithium battery on board. Here’s exactly how to do it properly, what your options are, and the easiest way to get it there ready to ride.

The short answer: Most standard parcel services aren’t built for e-bikes. The simplest option is a van-based courier that collects from the door and delivers to the door. With Rydiqo® Delivery it’s a fixed £89 across Mainland UK, tracked, with in-transit cover up to £10,000, no box or label on most bookings*, and delivery in 1–2 days on average.

Why Sending an E-Bike Is Harder Than It Looks

A normal bike is awkward to send. An e-bike adds weight, value and a battery that carriers treat very differently from a box of clothes. Three things trip most people up:

  • Size. Boxed, an adult e-bike is often longer than the roughly 1.5m maximum length many standard parcel services accept.
  • Weight. Most adult e-bikes weigh 20–30kg before packaging, which pushes them into heavy or oversized surcharges, or out of a service altogether.
  • The battery. Lithium-ion e-bike batteries are classed as dangerous goods for transport. Many parcel networks restrict or refuse them, especially loose.

Your 4 Options for Sending an E-Bike

Standard parcel courier

Needs a bike box, padding and a printed label. Strict size, weight and battery rules, and basic cover that rarely matches what an e-bike is worth.

Specialist bike courier

Built for bikes, but prices and booking windows vary, and many still expect the bike boxed or partly stripped down.

Drive it there yourself

No paperwork, but you lose a day (or two) to fuel, tolls and driving, and you’re carrying the risk if anything gets damaged on the way.

Rydiqo® Delivery

5
Collected and delivered Wheeled into the van at one door, wheeled out at the other, tracked the whole way, in 1–2 days on average.

How to Prepare Your E-Bike for Delivery

  • Charge the battery partly. Around 30–50% is ideal: not full, not flat.
  • Leave the battery fitted, and locked in if it locks.
  • Bag the charger, keys and any small accessories together so nothing goes missing.
  • Remove anything you want to keep: bottles, bags, phone mounts, removable lights.
  • Take clear, dated photos of every side, the frame number and the display.
  • Add any access notes (stairs, parking, gate codes) when you book.

Photo tip: Take your condition photos on the day of collection, in daylight, including close-ups of any existing scratches. If you ever need to make a claim, photos taken before collection make it quick and simple for everyone.

E-Bike Delivery FAQs

Do I need to box my e-bike?

On most bookings, no. Our courier wheels it straight into the van and delivers it ready to ride. Batteries, chargers and small parts may need to be bagged or boxed so nothing goes missing.

Can I send an e-bike with Royal Mail or Parcelforce?

It’s usually impractical. Standard parcel services have tight size and weight limits and strict rules on lithium batteries, so a boxed e-bike often doesn’t qualify. Always check the carrier’s current rules first.

How long does it take to send an e-bike?

With Rydiqo® Delivery, 1–2 days on average from collection, tracked the whole way.

Is my e-bike covered while it’s being delivered?

Yes. Every Rydiqo® Delivery includes in-transit cover up to £10,000. Report any damage within 48 hours of delivery, with photos and a timestamped unboxing video.

Do you deliver to Scotland, Northern Ireland or the islands?

Fixed prices cover Mainland UK. Highlands, Islands, Northern Ireland and ROI need a custom quote, so contact us before booking.
