Can You Post an E-Scooter in the UK? Rules, Options & Costs
Sold your e-scooter, or bought one from the other end of the country? You can’t legally ride a private e-scooter to the buyer, and most parcel services aren’t keen on lithium batteries. Here’s what actually works, what the law says, and how to get it there safely.
The short answer: Yes, you can send an e-scooter, but standard post is rarely the right way. Its built-in lithium battery and awkward size make it hard to send by parcel. The simplest option is door-to-door delivery: with Rydiqo® Delivery it’s a fixed £79 across Mainland UK, tracked, with in-transit cover up to £10,000 and no box needed on most bookings*.
Is It Legal to Sell and Send an E-Scooter?
Yes. Buying, selling, owning and transporting a private e-scooter in the UK is completely legal. What isn’t legal is riding one in public:
- Private e-scooters can’t be ridden on public roads, pavements or cycle lanes.
- They can be ridden on private land with the landowner’s permission.
- The only road-legal e-scooters are rentals in government trial areas, which are currently due to run until May 2028.
Why this matters for sellers: because a private e-scooter can’t be ridden on the road, “just scoot it over” isn’t an option, and many train and bus operators don’t allow e-scooters on board either (TfL has banned them across its network since 2021). For most sales, delivery is the only practical way to get it to the buyer.
Why Posting an E-Scooter Is Tricky
- The battery. Every e-scooter has a lithium-ion battery built in. Lithium batteries are regulated for transport, and many parcel services restrict or refuse items that contain large ones.
- Size and weight. Commuter scooters often weigh 12–20kg, and performance models a lot more. Even folded, many are longer than standard parcel limits allow.
- Packaging. You’d need a scooter-sized box, plenty of padding and a printed label, and it still might be refused at the depot.
- Cover. Basic parcel compensation rarely matches what a good e-scooter is worth.

How to Send an E-Scooter with Rydiqo® Delivery
How to Prepare Your E-Scooter
- Fold the stem and lock it in place, if your scooter folds.
- Charge the battery to around 30–50%, not full and not flat.
- Bag the charger, keys and any small parts together so nothing goes missing.
- Check nothing is loose: mudguards, bells, phone holders.
- Take dated photos of every side, the deck and the display before collection.
Seller tip: Mention “UK-wide insured delivery available” in your listing. Buyers outside your area are far more likely to commit when they know exactly how the scooter will reach them, and what it will cost.

No. Most e-scooter batteries are built in. Leave it in place and charge it to around 30–50%.
